Can You Jailbreak iPhone 4S?
We get a lot of questions on this site from people asking “Can you jailbreak iPhone 4S“? And it always amazes us, because it says right on our main landing page that, yes, you can do so. And for people who haven’t seen our landing page, the news of the 4S jailbreak was pretty huge. It was carried right on CNN and the Huffington Post among other major news sources. What’s more, the main jailbreak hacker behind the iPhone 4S jailbreak posted right on his blog about the jailbreak, which received a lot of coverage in the regular news media. Now, we’re not talking about the iPhone 5 jailbreak here. That jailbreak is still full of rumor, innuendo, and speculation, since the iPhone 5 hasn’t even launched yet. Rather, we’re dumbfounded that some people still haven’t heard about the way to jailbreak 4S.
So for those that aren’t aware of the launch of the 4S jailbreak, let’s clear things up here once and for all. Yes, you can jailbreak iPhone 4S. And yes, it’s untethered. You can find a lot more information about how to jailbreak 4S at our FAQ (follow that link). But for those who would just like to continue reading, the iPhone 4S JB was initially done by a guy who is a jailbreak hacker from France. He calls himself “Pod2G”. He was previously a member of the jailbreaking collective called the iPhone Dev Team. He’s since severed official ties with them, but continues to collaborate with his previous Dev Team team mates. To wit, the iPhone Dev Team hacker “Musclenerd” offered a lot of assistance to Pod2G according to updates on his aforementioned blog.
The jailbreak was several months in the making. When the 4S first debuted, many thought that a jailbreak would be imminent and that it would only take a few weeks or a month at the most. However, due to the fact that the 4S carried a totally new processor than what had been around before, this made the jailbreak that much more difficult. All in all, it was over 2 months from the time that the phone was launched to the time that the jailbreak came out.
Jailbreak iPhone 5 Speculation
This makes many people fearful about what the iPhone 5 jailbreak will be like. Rumor has it that the iPhone 5 will carry yet another new processor – possibly a quad core rather than the current dual core. Members of the jailbreak community are fearful that a way to jailbreak iPhone 5 won’t be possible at all. We don’t fall into that camp – we don’t believe that Apple is advanced enough yet to defeat all efforts to jailbreak one of it’s devices. However, we do believe that it could take quite some time to complete a jailbreak on iPhone 5. The potential for 3 months or more between the release of the iPhone 5 and a jailbreak coming out isn’t out of the question.
In a subsequent post, we’ll talk more about what the iPhone 4S jailbreak can do for you, and why you should jailbreak. For now, suffice it to say that, while jailbreaking isn’t as necessary as it once was due to Apple’s integration of previously “jailbreak only” features into it’s regular iOS, it’s still a “nice to have” thing, since no one wants Apple having control of their device any more than necessary.
